Three feet away the jagged line runs

as marked an hour ago when the earth collapsed

even now the crowds stream in

for the loved ones, the lost ones, the missing ones.

i sit here, by the crater rim, pondering

the mangled mass that lies beneath.

tracking the harsh pale mist rising.

as the last tuft of soil tumbles in.

wailing screams, blaring horns,

creaking iron and hurried shouts

can’t alter the finality of the wreckage

can’t arouse the deathly silence of destruction

time has not watered down the sharp edges

nor blended in the new soil mounds.

rain has not filled the newborn hollow

with the summer’s seeds and leaves.

Death mourns not for those passed away

Victors not weep for the fallen

Life shall not regret life gone by
