my answer used to be “because it’s paris”, that it is a dream that feeds on itself, but now perhaps i can start to see how so.
it is a great city. high population density, high cultural intensity, and the focus of an entire nation republic. [they always refer to themselves as republic]
but it’s a quiet city. especially when they’re not protesting in the streets. there are lots of people, lots of traffic, but you are not likely to feel oppressed by the traffic. really, seriously, it’s absolutely peaceful here, compared to some other major cities. oddly.
london, a vibrant capital, wows you with the spectacles performances and chatter on the streets. they like to express themselves verbally (no negative connotations), what with their strong theatre and writing. it draws you out into the crowd, into the life on the streets. the beer warms you and bubbles up fervently in you.
in spain the wide smiles, feverish life and passionate gestures fill up the gaps.
for the french, they leave you be. but to visitors, some construe that as a snub of foreigners. but is it really. peace and quiet. instead of drawing out into the crowd, they draw inwards towards friends. they sit quietly at the cafés, to be seen by everyone, but only heard by one. they think their thoughts deep and generate a ton of hidden philosophy and works. and if you are a couple, married or engaged or dating or flirting or flinging, and you are in paris you are drawn into yourselves. the city leaves you with peace and quiet, with gentle strolls and time to look and admire the scenery the grandeur the medievalism, the time to chat quietly, intimately. you have a gentle, soothing language. you have people who, in their lives, family and hobbies are more important than work. a fashion sense where everyone dress like it’s an important day everyday. the antique cafés and rarity of modern food makes it more personal and less sterile. where the artists painting feelings and happiness. you should see Renoir’s works in amsterdam compared to those when he moved to provence, it’s amazing.
you don’t come here to play games, to party, to cheer at performers. you come here to sit down, and love someone.
