Straw Qn

So the question is, when we are sucking up liquid with a drinking straw, where is the vacuum? How do you do it? (Don’t choke)

i believe i can safely assume that most of my audience understand the presence of a low pressure somewhere for it to work. I just like to call it Vacuum because it is a concise single word, albeit inaccurate.

So do you create it in

1. your mouth?

2. your stomach?

3. your diaphragm?

4. your lungs?

suggest more if you want to. it doesn’t feel like 1 to me. 2 doesnt have that kind of muscles. 3 well probable, but how does that translate through to the liquid. 4 is half probable but again how does that translate to the liquid? if 3 is true, then does that mean that the stomach is getting stretched open by the diaphgram. or perhaps 4 is true but how doesn’t the liquid go into the lungs.

“how doesn’t” is not a typo, it’s just a non stupid way of meaning “how come the liquid doesn’t”, or “how is it that the liquid doesn’t”. nor is “anyhow”

well, i feel like it’s 1. a little pressure would do, unless you are drinking jelly or milkshake or something.
if it’s 3, somehow i feel like i will choke everytime i use the straw. isn’t 4 controlled by 3?
on second thoughts, maybe it’s the combination of 1&3, 3 for the power and 1 for the control.
somehow i think i am going to have trouble the next time i use a straw. heh.

well, u just need to suck some air in. the amount of air is just those in the straw and in ur mouth. not a big amount. probably not in the lungs or else u get chocked. stomach is quite possible.

as long as the pressure in the mouth is reduced liquid will be sucked in. there comes the formula deltaP=rho*g*h. since h is usually just about 10 cm, the kind of vacuun u need is really low.

you say we only need to have negative pressure in the mouth, which implies that the pressure zone is created in the mouth? and what if the water comes up, does the pressure equilibrate? you should really try it out and tell me how you feel
