so after 2-3 days i got really tired of typing out the NUS userID and password to log into NUSOPEN on my phone. it just is too troublesome. i wish i had a touchscreen. if only i had bigger pockets (to put a big phone and to afford an expensive phone). so i couldnt figure head or tail of the settings and went searching. yay NUS had instructions on how to configure for Windows Mobile. GREAT. Windows Mobile again. argh what is it with everyone. it doesnt work, duh. the instructions look simple though. but no corresponding settings on Symbian. why is it so different! omg. i mean, if you switched from Windows to Linux, it’s still a normal LAN or Wifi setting. grah.
so i went googling. yay someone has some instructions for N95. hm it’s almost same generation as N78, and same OS. yipee. i still couldnt find the same exact menu configurations to enter. bother. although it looked so promising. after lots of trying and troubleshooting, it finally works! yipee. now i can just go onto NUS wireless without passwords. [currently im wondering if it works for Wireless@SG]
so if you have N95, go here.
if you have Windows Mobile, go here. and scroll down to NUS (PEAP) Network Configuration Guide for Windows Mobile 6 Devices. you can also look at other device configuration instructions if you like. tells you how to setup NUS network for Vista and XP too. they’ve got a auto-config program for XP. hm. but geeks like you shouldn’t need to resort to it. i mean, if you’re that helpless, you’ll probably be stuck on the NUS domain or have gone running to the IT@Coop by now. ok im digressing badly, but i gotta say that NUS IT department does a helluva good job. although i am not in favor of joining domain.
normally on my laptop i use Cisco-LEAP encryption, i couldnt find it on my phone. only various EAP-types. alright. went to google. apparently LEAP was this proprietary Cisco encryption that is no longer good. just like WEP is no good. so now they’re moved on to PEAP. fantastic. NUS is now using PEAP too. phone has PEAP too. good. perhaps i should get PEAP on my laptop. but later. [ok i just converted it to PEAP. buried in more settings pages.]
so i shall post my version of
How To Configure the Nokia N78 to use the NUS Wireless automatically:
i believe that by right you are supposed to go to Tools>Settings>Connection>Destinations>Access Point (Add new access point). However it keeps prompting for a WEP password, which NUS network does not have. gah.
So what i did was to go to Tools>Settings>Connection>Destinations>Internet> and modified one of the wireless access points to the NUS settings. instead of creating a new access point, I sorta cheated to get around the problem. Obviously don’t override the default Starhub or Singtel GPRS connection unless you wish to get rid of it. Choose another one or create a misc one using WLAN Wizard.
input these settings:
Connection Name: NUS (or anything you like)
Data Bearer: Wireless LAN
WLAN network name: NUS
Network Status: Hidden (note this was left at Public for the N95 settings but it din work for me)
WLAN network mode: Infrastructure
WLAN Security mode: 802.1x
Use access point: Automaticallygo into WLAN Security Settings
WPA/WPA2: EAP
go into EAP Plug-in Settings
only enable EAP-PEAP
go into EAP-PEAPPersonal Certificate: Not defined
Authority Certificate: Thawte Premium Server
Username in use: User Defined
Username: enter your NUS username u0×0xxxx, without any domain
Realm in use: User Defined
Realm: leave empty
Allow PEAPv0: Yes
Allow PEAPv1: No
Allow PEAPv2: Nopress the button to go to the right
only enable EAP-MSCHAPv2
go into EAP-MSCHAPv2 settings
username: NUS username as earlier
Prompt password: No
Password: enter your NUS passwordThat should suffice. just go back and open your browser. if necessary, go back to Tools>Settings>Connections>Internet and put NUS to the Prority 1 access point.
open browser, select a webpage, it should pop-up a window for you to select connection. select Internet “NUS” and it should auto-connect+login. yipee.
i have also managed to find some info on Wireless@SG. apparently Nokia teamed up to test out a software to enable auto-connection to the Wireless@SG network. iCell and Qmax are testing it at a few locations. =( why not islandwide. dah. it’s called Wireless@SG Seamless and Secure Access (SSA). details here.
