water and earth | jh

[29 jan]

Hello dear friend I have come to visit
bringing with me crisp unopened letters
that lay silently in your mailbox.
In the darkness it has defied decay and light,
each old and fresh as the months past.
A lady waits in a black dress, her long hair
swept back over her shoulders. In the clear meadow
she strikes a lonely figure. In solitude she
appears more than one, like an array of
mourners come to weep the night.
I would open this letter for you, I shall read
to you the unseen words, sent
by hand to a forgotten address. Hear the
sweet words and tender thoughts of yesterday,
if you could reply in kind. Hello world, perhaps
we could start over again? if you wish to,
bring me with you.
The trees, they mock me. My silliness, my persistence
Go home! they sneer at me. He is long past now,
mere water for our roots and air for us to breathe.
Go now you cannot save him, for he is already
in you and me. Each of us a part and yet
none shall have him. Forget thy sadness for there
is no end to it. Forget thy life before, it is new
again. Bless your soul, we will meet again,
but perhaps not so soon.
I take my leave, saying goodbye, but not
hearing one. Perhaps I said it to myself.
Goodbye.

a particularly peculiar piece of writing.

for you-know-who

water and air refers to the H20 and CO2 produced from cremation. water and earth just popped out coz it sounds nice.
